If you’re searching for a Charlotte family photographer, chances are you’ve probably seen a lot of the same thing: perfectly coordinated outfits, everyone smiling at the camera, beautiful golden-hour light, and children somehow sitting still long enough for a family photo. While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that kind of photography, that isn’t quite what I do at Fielding Photo. I believe your family deserves photographs that feel like YOUR family.
The belly laughs. The toddler who refuses to stand still. The way your little one reaches for your hand. The messy hair, the snuggles, the chaos, the quiet moments, and all of the little things you probably don’t realize you’ll miss someday.
My approach to documentary family photography in Charlotte, NC is centered around preserving those moments honestly and beautifully.
So, what can you actually expect when you book a family photography session with Fielding Photo??
What even is Documentary Family Photography, anyway?
Documentary family photography is less about creating a perfect photograph and more about telling the story of your family. Instead of spending your entire session posing and looking at the camera, I want to give your family space to interact naturally. That might mean playing together, chasing your kids around the yard, having a snack, reading a favorite book, dancing in the kitchen, walking through a field, or simply cuddling on the couch.
I’ll still guide you when I need to. I’ll make sure we get those beautiful family portraits, too, but I don’t want your gallery to be 30 variations of everyone standing in the same spot and smiling. I want you to look through your photos years from now and remember exactly what this season of life felt like.
Do My Kids Have to Behave?
Absolutely not. (Do they ever?) Actually, please don’t stress about it.
If you have toddlers, preschoolers, or young children, you already know that asking them to “smile nicely for the picture” can sometimes be the fastest way to make everything go completely sideways.
Your child doesn’t need to sit perfectly still. They don’t need to smile on command. They don’t even need to look at my camera. They just need to be themselves.
As a family photographer in Charlotte, one of the things I hear most often from parents is that they’re worried their child won’t cooperate during their session. That is exactly why I don’t build my sessions around cooperation. Instead, I photograph what naturally happens. Sometimes the sweetest photographs really do happen in the middle of the chaos.
What Actually Happens During a Fielding Photo Family Session?
When you (or I) arrive, we’re not immediately going to line everyone up and start posing. We’ll spend some time getting comfortable and letting your family settle in. I’ll give you prompts when they’re helpful, but most of the time, I’m watching. I’m looking for the way your daughter reaches for Dad’s hand. The way your toddler runs straight into your arms. The little smile your husband gives you when you’re not looking. The way your baby curls into your chest.
Those are the moments I want to photograph.
For families looking for lifestyle family photography in Charlotte, this approach creates photographs that feel relaxed and authentic while still being intentional and beautifully composed.
What Should We Wear for Family Photos?
You don’t need to completely reinvent your family’s wardrobe for photographs. In fact, I usually recommend choosing clothing that feels like you.
For my style of documentary family photography, I love warm, earthy, timeless colors and textures that complement your surroundings without distracting from the people in the photographs.
Think:
Soft neutrals
Earthy greens
Warm browns
Creams and ivory
Denim
Muted blues
Natural textures
Simple patterns
The goal isn’t for everyone to perfectly match- the goal is for your clothing to feel cohesive while allowing your family’s personalities to come through, and most importantly—wear something you can move in! If we’re chasing your toddlers through a field, snuggling on the floor, or playing in the backyard, you’re going to want to be comfortable.
What If My Child Won’t Cooperate?
We’ll roll with it. Seriously. Some of my favorite photographs happen when children aren’t doing what their parents expected them to do. Maybe your toddler spends half the session running away (I'll be playing tag). Maybe your baby needs to be held the entire time (I'll be letting them get cozy on your lap). Maybe your kids aren’t interested in the carefully planned activity you had in mind. That’s okay. Let them go crazy. Let them dance. Let them run. Let them wrestle. Let them be funny and goofy and laugh.
There is no perfect family photography session. There is simply your family, exactly as it is right now. That’s what I want to photograph.
Why I Don’t Want Every Photo to Be Looking at the Camera:
When you look through your photographs 10 or 20 years from now, I don’t want you to only remember what everyone looked like. I want you to remember how it felt. I want you to remember how tiny your baby’s fingers were. How your son used to wrap his arms around your legs. How your daughter laughed when Dad chased her around the backyard. How your family squeezed together on the couch.
How loud the house was. How little they were. Those seemingly ordinary moments are often the ones that become the most meaningful photographs later.
That’s the heart behind Fielding Photo. I believe there is beauty in the everyday.
Why Choose a Documentary Family Photographer in Charlotte?
There are so many talented family photographers in Charlotte, and every photographer has their own approach.
If you’re looking for highly posed portraits with everyone perfectly looking at the camera, there are wonderful photographers who specialize in that. If you’re looking for photographs that feel natural, nostalgic, emotional, and true to your family, documentary-inspired family photography might be exactly what you’re looking for.
My goal isn’t to manufacture moments. It’s to notice them.
Whether we’re photographing your family at home, exploring a beautiful outdoor location around Charlotte, or documenting an ordinary afternoon together, I’m looking for the little moments that tell the bigger story.
Your Family Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect for Family Photos
If you’ve been putting off family photographs because your kids are wild, your house is messy, you’re exhausted, or you don’t feel particularly “photogenic” right now—I want you to know something: You don’t have to wait for life to look better- this season is worth documenting, too. All of it. The baby who won’t stop moving. The toddler who insists on doing everything themselves. The sibling who is obsessed with their little brother. The dog who thinks they’re part of every photograph. The messy kitchen. The bedtime cuddles. The everyday routines that feel completely ordinary right now.
Someday, those ordinary things won’t be ordinary anymore- they’ll be memories. That’s why I photograph families the way I do. Not just to create beautiful photographs, but to create photographs that allow you to remember what your family felt like.
